Why Is My Refrigerator Leaking Water? 5 Common Causes

A leaking refrigerator is one of the most common appliance issues homeowners face. Not only is it annoying to clean up, but if left unchecked, it can cause significant water damage to your floors and surrounding cabinets.

1. Blocked Defrost Drain

The defrost drain carries water from the defrost cycle to a pan underneath the refrigerator, where it evaporates. If this drain gets clogged with food particles or ice, the water has nowhere to go and will leak out onto the floor.

2. Cracked or Loose Water Supply Line

If your fridge has an ice maker or water dispenser, it's connected to your home's water supply. Check the plastic or copper line running from the wall to the back of the fridge. If it's cracked, loose, or pinched, it will leak.

3. Uneven Refrigerator

Refrigerators need to be slightly tilted backward so the coolant can flow properly and condensation can drain correctly. If your fridge is completely level or tilted forward, water may spill out of the drain pan.

4. Damaged Door Gasket

The rubber seal around your fridge door prevents warm air from entering. If it's torn, cracked, or dirty, warm air seeps in, causing excess condensation that drips down and pools under the unit.

5. Clogged or Frozen Ice Maker Line

If the water line feeding your ice maker freezes or gets kinked, it can cause leaks at the connection point. You may also notice your ice maker producing smaller cubes or none at all.

While some of these issues are easy DIY fixes, others require professional attention.
