Dishwasher Leaving Dishes Dirty? Common Fixes Explained

Few things are more frustrating than unloading your dishwasher only to find food still stuck to your plates. Before you assume the worst, let's walk through the most common causes and fixes.

You're Loading It Wrong

This is the number one reason dishwashers underperform. Plates should face the center spray arm, bowls should be angled downward, and nothing should block the detergent dispenser door from opening. Avoid nesting items together — water needs to reach every surface.

Clean the Spray Arms

The small holes in the spray arms can get clogged with mineral deposits or food particles. Remove the spray arms (they usually twist off) and use a toothpick or thin wire to clear each hole. Soak them in vinegar for stubborn buildup.

Check the Water Temperature

Dishwashers need water at 120°F (49°C) to effectively dissolve grease and detergent. Run your kitchen faucet on hot until it's steaming before starting the dishwasher to ensure hot water reaches the machine immediately.

Clean the Filter

Most modern dishwashers have a manual-clean filter at the bottom of the tub. If you've never cleaned it, there's likely a significant buildup of food debris. Remove it, scrub with a brush under running water, and reinstall.

Use the Right Detergent Amount

More detergent doesn't mean cleaner dishes. Too much creates excess suds that actually redeposit food particles. Use the manufacturer's recommended amount, and consider switching to a high-quality pod or tablet.
